But the capitalists keep telling me our lives are great because now we have computers and cars and sugar in all our food! Don’t tell me they lied to me…

The standard of living for the vast majority is better but the anxiety of being on the edge of losing it is as high as it has ever been.

        Technology? = More

        Escapism? = Also more

Climate change? = Exponentially more, to the level of potential extinction

(Not against technology btw, just need to control this shitty climate)

      wait woah

the sugar thing just clicked something for me. I’m not exactly sure what it is that clicked, but often Dune’s Melange is compared to oil. Melange spice is probably more accurately comparable to sugar, as sugar is a psychoactive substance.

Sugar causes a cascade of reactions in the body, with different amounts causing different effects and altering some people completely. Take diabetes type 2 - there is a genetic component to it, but it has been empirically shown to be a consequence of consuming sugar. Compare this to the Guild Navigator who becomes incapable of living in an environment lacking Melange because they’ve consumed so much of it.

They gave us bread and circuses.

Why do you think there’s so much money in entertainment?

Yeah but at least the bread was free and the circuses were good. Now bread costs another dollar more every time there are ‘supply chain issues’ and the circus is what we used to call news.

So what you’re saying is that we just haven’t reached the beheadings stage yet. I get what youre saying.

So, probably not the intended message, but clearly the beheadings got us nowhere.

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

      Less scheduled violence.

Everyone showed up to public beheadings. Mass shootings are way more common but sporadic.

mm, maybe just less localized/ more hidden (if one is fortunate enough to live in a relatively wealthy region of a metropole)?

I mean that’s the benefit of nukes. Either we have less wars, or we will have one final war, and never have to see another war, ever again.

        We should bring them back!

If you have a net worth over 100 million you’ve won capitalism and gets a speedy ticket to the afterlife as a prize.

Well if the Nika Riots of Constantinople are anything to go by and history repeating itsself, it won’t be long before sports fans overthrow the government and burn down half the city.
