If mine brings you one of her toys she wants food. My wife calls them trading tokens when she does that.
German shepherds love to carry random stuff, I know one that brings huge rocks inside the house.

Adorable! My Luna Bear does this. Usually a toy, but sometimes a sock or bottle. We think she is part Golden Lab and part German Shepherd
Same with my Molly. Border collie/beagle mix, when she spots anyone come inside she runs to grab either a toy or a shoe and growls while dancing around.
I love it. If you don’t pay immediate attention to Luna she will start talking. I can’t even describe the noises she makes
