Seeing screenshots of ICS makes me feel pretty nostalgic about my old Galaxy Nexus. I don’t remember having any complaints about it. Anyone else feel the same way?

I remember when I first flashed CyanogenMod ICS on my S2 - it worked better than stock gingerbread! Loved everything about it.

Ah, the good old days of giving Samsung devices a second change at life! I really dislike how north American models have locked bootloader these days.

I did the same with my S2! It was such a great ROM. I’m still blown away by how responsive it feels whenever I get nostalgic and dig the old guy out of storage.

Sometimes I feel that android pre Lollypop was quintessential android. KitKat was so good on the Nexus 4. I had zero issues and I still miss the ticker notifications. Much simpler times I guess.

I think this is because now the consumer knows what he or she wants. It’s hard to build a mobile UI without expectations of consistency.

Back then, Android was more marching to the beat of its own drummer as it were and more dramatically crafting its design language, its visual identify.

Tech was more exciting in those days. Things were improving so fast, and there was a lot of freedom for users to make their device and services their own. Things are more buttoned down now, and while many things work better, it isn’t as exciting. When I first turned on my Galaxy Nexus I felt like I had teleported to the future. The device had its issues (hilariously short battery so I always carried a spare, screen burn in, and overheating), but the thing still works!

Imagine the start of the PC revolution. Also pretty exciting times.

Mature tech just isn’t as fun.

I totally felt the same way about my Galaxy Nexus and pretty much every phone until recent times. Although I do wonder whether it’s really about the devices or us just being older now!

I miss the Recents-view from ICS.

It was so much easier to scroll and showed so much more than the modern just-barely-zoomed-out-fullscreen side-scrolling one.

Even better: make it a toggle. I prefer the current view, as I can easily glance at another application. I remember how on ICS I thought that if they are going to cut off most of the screen, why even bother with a preview at all? The icon would do just as well.

The first android device i ever used was a tablet with android 4.0.4, mfs never updated it and there are no ROMs available for it…

Loved that phone. I miss Shamu. The Pixels just aren’t the same.

I think the Pixel devices are better but they don’t have the personality I remember from Nexus devices (sorry [email protected]).

That’s totally true. And the wondrous front facing speakers.

I used the galaxy nexus forever, and then put cynagen mod on it, the lineage on it… it became the backup phone of abuse and for anything sketchy. Loved that phone.
