It keeps asking me spend my knowledge point but I would rather not.

You have to spend it before you can gain progress towards a new knowledge point.
I’m not sure it’s a bug, but it’s something they presumably might change in the future.
It’s basically trying to stop you from wasting effort doing stuff … because you won’t get progress towards an additional point until you spend your current point.
Ah, I have been wasting effort.
Just spent it on XP.
