Having just finished watching the show, I thought I’ll make a discussion post.

it felt like it fell off, plot growing more and more discombobulated as time went on
I really loved the drama towards the beginning, but I felt like it fell off over time. A lot of the plotlines felt half-baked and/or forgotten. The main plot could have used a lot more development. Like, I didn’t really feel the pain the main character had in relation to the first life. I think some of the other lives were well written, but overall, there was a lot more to be desired when it came to the past lives, especially the first one, which was supposedly the most important one. I loved the acting, cinematography, and some of the locations were beautiful, but the story itself had so much potential.
I think Hotel Del Luna is a good comparison here. I was invested in Jang Man Wol’s story and suffering because I thought it was well-developed. They took the time to tell her life’s story through the flashbacks and I actually felt her suffering, although I also think that’s because IU is a terrific actress. I think Shin Hye Sun is great as well, but they could have utilized her range better, imo. I’m going to read the webtoon now because I heard that the story there is much better.
I agree with your first paragraph. I think the story about her first life was introduced pretty late in the series. We spent close to 9 out 12 episodes focusing only on her 18th life, with a little introduction here and there about her other lives, but not much (if at all) of her first. Then suddenly the focus shifted to her first life, because it was supposedly the most important one that started all this. Yea that’s not going to work well in an already shorter drama.
As for your second part, I’m probably biased because I absolutely love Shin Hye Sun, but personally I don’t think acting is the issue here. I see pacing as the main problem with this series (e.g. overuse of the pool and accident flashbacks). They are trying to fit too much materials into a shorter drama and had trouble with story/focus placements throughout.
I’m usually very forgiving in regards to acting, because I think it’s unfair when actors and actresses get the criticism even when they are acting as directed and followed the script well.
One thing I want to say though. But first, SPOILER!! for those who haven’t watched the series in full, because I still don’t know how spoiler tag works here lol. I’m SO glad Seoha’s dad turned out to be a fairly decent person! I was worried he was the mastermind behind the accident and somehow had something to do with his wife’s death as well, but I’m glad that he was just a protective father and loved his son in his own way. I’m still not sure what was the reasoning behind the accident. I know the plan was just to scare them and it went overboard. But to scare them for what?
Anyway, I’m interested in the webtoon as well now. Where do you find them?
Sorry for the late reply. I don’t particularly disagree with you. I think Shin Hye Sun was great as well. I just feel like the first life didn’t have the emotional depth it needed (in terms of plot) to have an impact on me. As for the webtoon, you can find it on webtoons.com.
Where do you find out about good webtoons? There’s been one or two okay ones but I’m always so overwelmed by the options and I don’t really know where people discuss these kinds of things.
For the longest time I discussed them on r/manga. I stopped a few years ago though. It’s kind of hard to answer your question exactly. I used to read what I found interesting on sites like webtoons and other free official sites, as well as fan translations on mangadex.
Fair enough. I find discovery difficult since there is a lot of crap out there and a lot of promoted stuff isn’t that great imo. Appreciate that reply though.
