When our first child learned to use the potty we used diapers during naps and overnight. The nap diapers faded after a month or so, but the overnight diapers took like a year. What’s worse is that he started pooping only when he had the diaper on, usually in the morning before getting out of bed. This was… not ideal.

I imagine that if we just ditch the diapers entirely then we would have a few days of wetting the bed, but maybe that’s worth it? Or does it become a persistent problem? Or does bed wetting at this stage create unexpected problems? Any experience or advice would be great!

Second hand, but I’ve heard that diapers can delay potty training because they keep things drier so it’s less noticable.

A couple tips I’ve seen around the internet:

    • Put on regular underwear underneath the diaper so wetness is felt more but contained.

    • Make a bed lasagna. Mattress protector, sheet, protector, sheet. That way when there are accidents you can just rip off the top 2 layers, put it in the wash, and go to bed still protected for round 2.

Ditto on layering the bed. When we started potty training we did away with diapers entirely. I think it took maybe 4 days before they went a day without accidents (not that there weren’t any over the next few weeks).

We stopped with the night time diapers as soon as there was no overnight usage for a few days. After that point, everything went pretty smoothly, we’ve only had one accident since. If your kid seems to be able to reliably hold it, it’s worth trying for sure!
