- Ministers to review the BBC’s Charter to examine the BBC’s future funding
- Licence fee to rise in line with annual CPI inflation in 2025 to provide the BBC with stable financial footing
- Thousands more households to be offered support to pay TV licence fee
Do you need to pay a TV license if you get your smart fridge to run a browser, and internet access to watch YouTube via your cousin’s mobile hotspot? Or are you only required to pay if you click on someone’s live stream?
No, you only need to get one if you’ve already passed the theory and practical sections of your TV test.
I failed my TV test last year.
Accidentally held the channel change button for too long, ended up on babestation.
Instant end of the test.
I didn’t even get that far. I failed to read teletext from 20 metres away.
There are only two actions that require a TV license:
- Using BBC iPlayer for any reason
- Watching live broadcast TV from any source
YouTube does not have a broadcasting licence (granted by Ofcom) so YouTube live streams do not count as broadcast TV.
At least I’m pretty sure that’s how that works
Will clicking BBC on YouTube oblige you to pay a TV license?
