    The thing is, if they’re paid minimum wage, working more than a few hours a week can take all their benefits.

    Even something as minor as having more than a thousand or two in savings can trigger that in some state

    When the alternative to working for $1/hr is paying $20/hr for a day program…

    This is just going to result in a lot of people with disabilities being further cut off from society. Like, I did an internship at a day program, and even stuck around for a while after. Getting a job was something the clients would spend a decade or two working towards.

    What I’d love to see is a dollar for dollar offset.

    If they pull in $300/month from a job, instead of yanking 100% of benefits, just reduce their payment by at most $300. If someone pulls in more than their benefits, keep them in the system because who knows how long they’ll keep the job.

    When the risk of trying to be self sufficient comes with the risk of taking years to get services again, I don’t think lawmakers from either party understand how hard that conversation is with someone who wants nothing more than to have a job like the rest of their family.
