I played Dauntless a little bit in the early days. It was extremely simplified Monster Hunter with little of the charm.

Yeah, pretty much. I tried Dauntless before any MH game, and called it quits after the first two monsters. I felt I was getting drowsy during the fights. I eventually stopped dodging their attacks since they didn’t hit very hard, and I had tons of potions.

I tried Monster Hunter World afterward, and the first large monster fight (Great Jagras) was thrilling, and I was immediately hooked.

One of my buddies had the same experience with Dauntless, and it took a lot of convincing to get him to try MHW afterward.

I thought Dauntless was mildly entertaining, but too shallow to have any kind of lasting power. Maybe I should try Monster Hunter again. I felt like the intro/tutorial just. kept. going. and eventually just gave up.

Is Rise a terrible place to start? It’s on gamepass, World isn’t anymore.

Rise might be the best place to start from a tutorial standpoint. I’ve replayed MHW many times and I feel like even knowing what I’m doing it takes hours before I’m actually in the game. Rise came out during COVID and was half-released when it did which meant they didn’t pour as much time into over-extending the intro. The downside is Rise is exceptionally mechanically stacked for a MH game, so it may take a little time to get started from that standpoint. But also, I would discover new weapon mechanics 70+ fights into using a weapon also, so don’t worry about trying to learn it all up front.

Rise is fine to start with, and yes, I agree with the tutorial stuff. There are a lot of game mechanics, though, so I get the tutorial stuff.

I remember Dauntless before the Epic store. It was like Monster Hunter but stripped down to the same 3 moves you could chain together to attack a monster that had 3 different attacks. There was simply less of each aspect of Monster Hunter in Dauntless and no cooking. Now Dauntless has removed some more features, weapons, and damage types. I don’t rightly know what is left.

Free RPG Dauntless comes to Steam

I’m pretty sure they mean it comes BACK. It was already on Steam years ago, when they took the bag and ran.

Why are the devs so confident that “less is more” is what the players of this genre want?

    Absolute braindead idols.

Damn I forgot about that one. I think I claimed a few things from prime gaming but never got passed the tutorial missions. Just didn’t feel good.
