Completely unrelated but why do many recent questions on Lemmy seem overly convoluted and difficult to interpret? Isn’t this just a long-winded version of “What’s your game of the year and why?” or am I missing something?

Anywho, Balatro I guess. Love me some deckbuilding roguelikes and it’s accessible to people who don’t traditionally play computer games. I also like to imagine it might be helping some gambling addicts out there fill their boots without losing all their money. It’s a solid third place in the genre for me behind StS and Monster Train.

Really struggling to think what NEW game I bought this year… I mean, I own an Xbox Series X, PS5, Steam Deck and Switch… there must have been SOMETHING…

The idea that nothing made an impression to the point I have to check a Wiki is not a good sign.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_in_video_games

    Dragon’s Dogma 2 - 3/22
Little Kitty Big City - 5/9
Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics - 9/12
Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration Expanded Edition - 10/25
    Marvel Rivals - 12/6

    Planning on this one today:
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle - 12/9

Lots of re-releases, re-masters, re-mixed which I’d argue don’t count for GOTY. Not original to this year.

So, yeah, nothing new I played this year rises to GOTY.

I played the OG game that came with the PS5, it was fun! I wasn’t down to pay $60 for a sequel. I might get it if there’s a decent sale.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erd Tree.

Absolute banger of a DLC. Felt like it could almost be a full game. Just incredibly polished and well done. It made me smile seeing Miyazaki tear up while accepting GOTY for Elden Ring and promised good things coming and he delivered.

Maybe Echos of Wisdom? Maybe UFO 50. Feels like a pretty weak year for new games

Caves of Qud, absolutely incredible world building, extremely interactive and complex, as well as just all around fun. Its like the wackiness of Space Station 13 meets Fallout 1 with ancient Semitic flavoring. Super dope game 10/10
