I have a DS920+ which I haven’t upgraded the ram for, so it still has the default 4GB on it. Reading around, it sounds like Synology only supports adding an additional 4GB for it, but some other sites mention putting an additional 8 or 16 into it.
Has anyone upgraded theirs with more ram? What have you added and what were your experiences?
I upgraded the RAM of my RS1222 to 32GB shortly after I bought it. I ordered memory with pretty much identical timings like the original ones from Synology with the max compatible capacity and it worked fine for me.
I wanted to tell you this so you can probably save some money, even if nobody has experience with your model. Only downside for me were notifications on every boot that non original RAM was detected. Other than that everything works fine for two years now.
Ok, I’ll take a look at the timings. Someone mentioned Crucial CT16G4SFD8266 16GB, which I might take a look at.
I was able to add 16gb to my ds220+ for a total of 18gb, which exceeds what Synology claims you can run. Had success with timetec, but have heard crucial works as well.
Main thing that was an issue for me was having to reinstall the ram a few times. Don’t be afraid to be a little rougher than on other machines, needs to be fully inserted and it took a good bit of force for it to finally take
Also DS220+, added 8GB for a total of 10GB with no issues. Official max allowed RAM is 6GB I think.
My make and model of RAM is Kingston 99U5700-027.A00G
I added another 32GB to my 923+ recently. Looking around, I found that speicher.de (German shop specializing in RAM) offers RAM for specific Diskstation models beyond Synology’s specification, and they guarantee you that it’s going to be working! (They call this “overRAMing”). For the DS920+, you can find the offered RAM sizes here. I have had zero problems, my NAS now has 36 GB RAM, shows no errors or warnings, and I’ll probably upgrade it to overall 64 GB sometime. And my 218+ runs with 10 GB RAM since several years without any issues or warnings. Rather the opposite: in both cases, the difference was tremendous, it felt like entirely new (much faster) devices. I can highly recommend.
[Edit: I changed the German links to the corresponding ones of their English site]
I bought
Timetec 16GB DDR4 2666MHz (DDR4-2666) PC4-21300 (PC4-2666V) Non-ECC Unbuffered 1.2V CL19 2Rx8 Dual Rank 260 Pin SODIMM Laptop Notebook PC Computer Memory RAM Module Upgrade (16GB)
from Amazon for my DS220+. It was plug and play and the system has been running flawlessly for a couple months using Sonarr, Radarr, qBittorrent, and a couple other things.I’ve just added 8GB on a DS416Play and it sees all of it.
Edit: Oh and going from 1GB, general performance is night and day. No more swap grinding down performance and I’ve disabled memory compression.
I have this exact one. You need to find a module that’s exactly the right spec as I tried one with faster speeds and it didn’t work.
This is the one I got: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NZSKNBD?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I added 16GB to mine. It was recognized without me doing anything special. I run about 15 Docker containers in addition to the normal Synology suite. I only end up using about 3 GB of ram, but I don’t mind having 17 GB available for paging.
I ended up adding 16GB to mine to bring it up to 20 in total. It has been running great ever since I installed it. My biggest problem before hand was I am running a mysql docker container that was taking a huge performance hit, to the point of timing out some of the apps I was running against it, and that has cleared up.
