Jude Law is a good actor. The nostalgia and wonder is infinite. That’s all.
I am absolutely loving the show. Normally we do not get to watch it until Sunday, was super excited to see the new episode today.
I caught up with this over Christmas. It’s surprisingly great. It’s very much a kids show - not in the sense that that phrase is used as a byword for shitness, but more like some of the best entertainment ever made is made for kids (e.g. Paddington 2, or Muppets Christmas Carol, or Bluey, or Princess Bride).
There’s a lot to like as an adult - the kids act like kids, not weirdly precocious Hollywood brats, it doesn’t over-use the Volume, and it’s primarily reference points aren’t just other Star Wars projects. It was cute to see Aldanhi get a mention, but it’s more interested in evoking things like Peter Pan, the Wizard of Oz, and the various Amblin films (shockingly enough, even stuff that Disney doesn’t own).
I think the fact that it is made for kids is its saving grace. If this same concept was made without children explicitly in mind, it would be dour, depressing, and pumped so full of lore and references that you’d need to read every obscure novel or comic to know what was going on.
So far the show feels like a fun romp in the Star Wars universe, and to me it feels a lot like the original trilogy.
I’ve enjoyed watching it week to week but I’m looking forward to convincing someone else to watch it and being able to binge it.
Some shows benefit from week to week, and some from being bingeable, this is definitely one that will be great to watch in an evening.
Goonies was better. This is just Goonies in space. It’s not awful, but I wouldn’t call it especially great. There’s no emotional connection with the kids.
Neel is my hero.
Also just because Goonies is better doesn’t mean this isn’t great.
Correct. Why the fuck should something being good, be a zero sum game?
The show brings back memories of all those 80’s kids adventure movies: Explorers, Time Bandits, Stand By Me, The Never Ending Story…
Exactly.
You can’t just watch the best of something and then never watch anything else. The Goonies will forever be excellent, but Explorers has more sci-fi, Time Bandits has more Pythons, Stand By Me is more mature/growing, The Never Ending Story is more fantasy.
They’re all good, even if one is best, seeing them all is still worth your time.
