I read that it’s cheaper to ship an east-west/west-east US domestic cargo via the Panama Canal than to build an east-west/west-east railroad within the US.
Well one thing involves building an insane amount of public infrastructure, and the other involves shipping things on boats… So yeah, I imagine it costs a whole lot more.
