Negotiating the price of my car I did not have the luxury of walking away because my old one broke down.

I got a reasonable deal by agreeing to the price but requesting they do the big service that was coming up next year anyway. It’s relatively cheap for them to do compared to what I’d have to pay.

When negotiating a deal, make your offer, listen to the response and walk away (not rudely, just…you have somewhere else to be). The first one who calls back loses. This works well for buying a car.

Edit: oops, hit submit too quickly. I used this to buy an ATV long ago and many cars since. "I can spend $XXX (know this nunber before you start). <wait for counter offer>. It’s a nice ATV, but I promised myself that I’d spend no more than $XXX. Thank you for your time. "

This is a very generic question but I think I know where you’re coming from.

A lot of people react to things rather than consider what effect they want. Look at what you’re doing, and ask yourself if you think this will get you the change or response you want.

i.e. Sometimes yelling, or flipping someone off at road rage can feel good, but it doesn’t get that driver to reconsider their poor driving. Give them a shameful finger wag and you’ve got them thinking…

Pause and reflect on what you expect your behavior to accomplish.

RE the road rage finger, I have kids in the car so I started giving a forceful, emphatic thumbs-up. I like the finger wag idea though - gonna try that.

I always go for the exaggerated thumbs up, especially when someone cuts me off or tailgates me. Really throws them off.

By just being a kind and decent person. I mostly get by on the kindness of strangers. I make a point of paying it forward.

I did the opposite of what my instincts were telling me to do.

My instincts got me into the situation and I had to try something different.
