So Arteta has put out via Ornstein that he wants Williams this month but money is an issue. However Swiss Ramble has said we have a couple hundred million to work with according to the public accounts. This raises questions over what we’re doing. As it’s clearly not a negotiation tactic given that Williams has a very reasonable release clause.
If they are working to offload Williams in the middle of the season for a cute rate, they might smell proverbial blood in the water (as in: he wants to go and they want him gone) and be looking to shave a few more million off a deal by underplaying how much transfer funds are available.
I don’t think we have the time, space or luxury to be shaving off millions. Also £60m for world-class talent isn’t a bad shout.
Oh I agree. I’m just suggesting a possible explanation. But yeah, if we can bring Williams in for that price just do it!
58M is indeed very reasonable. I wonder if there’s pressure to negotiate down from there, like we did with Thomas (even though we eventually did end up triggering the clause). I think it’d be better to just pull the trigger and settle everyone’s nerves a bit.
This is my thinking. Williams wanted to stay but the season hasn’t gone to plan. I can’t see this story surfacing unless there’s been positive feedback from the player, but then we’ve also seen that isn’t always the case, i.e. Vlahovic and Zubimendi
