I did that about 10 years ago, me and my brother spent Christmas by changing tapes cutting videos and naming the files. In the 90ies my dad bought a camera and we filmed a lot for a couple of years and it’s awesome to have the videos. There are so many people there who are dead now, pictures are great but on a video you see how they moved in a particular way, how they spoke and how they interacted with each other, it’s amazing! I recommend everyone to record their parent and grandparents just doing boring every day stuff like cooking or just drinking tea or cleaning the yard.
Libraries (generally in cities) often have hardware and software for this. I know mine has elgato.
Im not sure if its better, but there seems to be all in one cables like this one: https://www.amazon.com/USB-Video-2-0-Capture-Card/dp/B0D2DFHGW7 that might be a bit cheaper?
