My mom died and left me a house (a co-op if that matters) it has a lien on it for more then the house is worth. I’ve called real estate lawyers but none of them want to take me on. I think I just want to get rid of it but I want to talk to a lawyer before I do. Does anyone know what I should look for? Thanks in advance.

I second an estate attorney or maybe a wills and trusts guy. Not sure where you are in the process (e.g. executor or recipient). If there is a lien on it over the value (not knowing where you are (so not legal advice™) I’d think you’d end up losing the house (or the total value of the house) (ie. Not make anything off this). Not sure what you mean by co-op here. Does she share ownership of the deed?

Thanks for your advice. I’m in New York State. By co-op it means she didn’t really own the house or the land it was on she had shares in the overall co-op that allowed her to live in the house (If that make sense it’s all new to me so I could be getting this wrong).

Sorry for the late reply. Definitely consult local counsel. Your state may have a directory for referrals to counsel. You may be able to get away with only an hour (or less) of legal consulting (+plus settlement (.eg a propionate section of the shares) if you’re willing to settle the matter with the lien holder.

Edit: again not legal advice. I’m not your lawyer.

Maybe an estate lawyer? But I’m no expert.

Either way, my condolences to you.
