Most of the world thinks Trump is joking about his desire to acquire Greenland. I don’t. He knows three things which motivate his desire.

The first is that Greenland has significant quantities of scarce resources, the value of which he thinks will go up as global warming advances.

Second, he wants those resources to bolster a failing US economy, which is what he knows he is facing. This has always been the reason why countries seek overseas territory.

Third, he thinks that the people of Denmark, who have legal control of Greenland, will not care about it, and so, ultimately, there is a price that could be agreed for it.

Why, then, do I think Scotland might be next on his shopping list?

The first and obvious reason is that once they have begun collecting territory, megalomaniacs do not stop asking for more. A long and uncomfortable history confirms this.

Second, unlike most Americans, Trump has some actual experience outside the USA, much of it in Scotland. This puts Scotland on his radar.
