“It could be worse” says someone who’s never experienced depression in their life to someone who’s been suicidal for half their life.

    Low standards indeed.

I interpreted the title as being reflective in a general sense as in “Don’t complain about X because back in the 50s/60s/70s/whatever0s people would do y which is way worse”

I know, and most people who say that have no idea what the other person is feeling. Perhaps it is worse, but at some point big number + 1 stops mattering.

Old guy here. No one’s saying you can’t complain. We’re simply saying life was worse in many ways, so here’s some perspective.

With perspective you can sort out, “hell yeah, we’re doing way better” from “hell no, this shit is slipping backwards”.

80s Los Angeles had Beijing levels of choking smog. Today (01/08/25) it’s burning to the ground. So if I say stop bitching about the smog, that doesn’t mean I don’t care about the fire. Nor does it mean I feel you should have suffered the smog.

It’s better now because people didn’t stay put and accept the status quo IMO.

The world is awful. The world is much better. The world can be much better.
