Solid choice. I wish we as a species weren’t so quick to glorify war.
Similarly, my pick would be Homage to Catalonia by Orwell
Fahrenheit 451
Why?
God is Not Great - Christopher Hitchens
The vast majority of our species leans on religion for anything they don’t understand, and we’d be better off if people didn’t do that.
Siddhartha
Great choice in my opinion, why did you choose it?
It teaches the ultimate in human empathy. It taught me that we are all brothers and sisters. It taught me that time is an illusion and that we are all one in the stream of life.
Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates.
It’s basically a letter from a father to his son about all the concerns an African American person has regarding their children’s safety. That is a very poor explanation of this book. It’s one of the few books I have read that has shaken me to my soul. I have been forever changed by this book. As a white person, it opened my eyes to things I never thought about. It is a captivating and moving read, but you will not view the world the same way ever again.
I really enjoyed Tao te Ching. I loved the parables and knowing that it was an influential person trying to teach the next king to come how to be more reasonable. My favorite parable from the book is “yield and overcome”.
1984 so everyone would stop misusing it
As a privacy enthusiast, I cringe whenever people refer to 1984 as being about privacy and how “big brother” is watching them at all times. It’s not about that.
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe.
An excellent portrayal of British colonization of Africa, but it also shows the consequences of viewing any group of people as inferior
Even Cowgirls Get The Blues
Because you shouldn’t take anything too seriously.
Are you there god? It’s me Margaret by Judy Bloom
Why? Because it shows what’s little girls go through during puberty and I think it’s importatant to learn these things. Boys or girls
Siddhartha because it teaches empathy.
A Man For all Seasons. Integrity and conscience matter.
