After two years me and my girlfriend moved together last week. When I thought I couldn’t be happier, she bought us rotisserie chicken.
It was like a firework in my head.

One week since I finally started HRT after years of misery and antidepressant induced apathy. Mind is clearer, I can see an actual future for myself not obscured by fog and had a few actual moments of genuine happiness.
I also came out to my one of my best friends who lives abroad and have struggled to stay in contact with, which not only rekindled our friendship but redefined it. They have been so instantly accepting of me and non-judgemental.
I got a new camera for my microscope!!! More detail on all the little fellas.

How the heck?!? So, are those sand microbes in a solution or something? They look like they’re just floating from place to place…!
I can’t really tell if they are inside or on top of the sand grains. The sand is from a reservoir near me, so all the little guys are in water. Water apparently feels more viscous the smaller you are.

If you don’t mind another dumb question, I looked at the backyard dirt ciliate, is that lil fella in water as well?
Yeah all of mine are water based. That one is from dirt that I got from my back yard. I added water at about a 5:1 ratio then waited a few days for the microbes to wake up. Soil is crazy active. Kinda blows my mind how much goes on in soil.
Edit: and yeah please ask away, I find this stuff so interesting. I really enjoy sharing.
My boss was away, so I got to work in peace all week! This happiness carried over to my free-time and I slept better.
Micromanagement sucks. But let’s keep it positive: last week was nice!

I even basically like mine but life is so much easier when she’s too busy to ask questions or offer input.
100%… I like my boss too, but he doesn’t understand that he is micromanaging me and that things end up taking longer. I don’t think this is a personality issue only. I think it is lack of experience and knowledge about management.
I don’t know about your organization but I’m a dev in a very large non profit and our managers rise through the dev ranks. Which sort of makes sense but is also kind of bizzare. “You’re good at coding, why not organizing and managing people now?” Especially funny as most of my team are lovely people but social interactions are not my team’s strong suit to put it mildly.
Yeah the workers becoming managers is always a double edged sword in my experience. They understand the work, but there is deep value with management/leadership training (which they often don’t have).

I also work as a dev, but for an academic working group (not software or compsci).
That’s all good, but I just want to do my job and leave work at work. I don’t want to be contacted on my free-time. Academics don’t understand this way of thinking.
Yeah, the social thing cracks me up as I also work heavily with the events and comms team who are, as you might expect from their unit, fun and gregarious folks who genuinely enjoy each other so it’s a bit of whiplash going from their meetings or social events to ours.
I wonder what proportion of lemmys are devs…
Ha, yeah for a lot of academics I feel their work is their life and they see no reason it shouldn’t be yours too! I hope you’re still able to carve out your own “fuck off n leave me alone” time!
Hey I used to stay for coffee with the marketing team of my previous employer because they were more fun!! Lol glad to hear I wasn’t the only person enjoying the comms people! I know exactly how you feel!
Probably a big portion of us, but I hope that it gets diversified. Love reading about other fields as well and enjoy looking at posts from [email protected] too on top of dev work :)
Thankfully I can, they haven’t yet followed me home ;) hope you are enjoying your work environment as well apart from micromanaging and socially awkward devs!
Ha, fully agree, glad to hear I’m not the only dev who enjoys the other teams! (Sometimes I’m not so sure… Like, when I had to lead a training about getting project requirements that basically boiled down to “have you tried asking people questions?” the answer to which was a resounding “No. They wrote down what they wanted, why would I ask about it? If they meant something else, they should write that.”
Oh dang, thanks for the machinist community, that looks super cool. Love seeing the stuff people can build, such a refreshing change from our intangible but ridiculously complex projects. “Oh, so you got some numbers to show there? Okay.” “No but those numbers are really tricky and… Yes. I just got some numbers to show there.” Another dev buddy and I worked on his cabin during the summer and though the work was hard and sweaty my God was it rewarding.
Absolutely love my work environment, even if I spend too much of it on here… Hope you do too!
Kitten is letting me hold and pet her little head while she purred and purred and purred.
Saw some old friends and we went out for fancy pizza, at a presumably instagram famous place given the line/ages etc. But, with 4 old friends, laughing and catching up in line was still a great time!
Also played a few games of soccer, two where I felt like the old man I pretend not to be but two felt really good.
And the weather forecast is finally calling for snow on our local ski hills so I’m going to take a morning off and if the weather holds, a full day for a better mountain farther away.
Oh, and finally listened to a buddy and started Severance, holy hell that show is great! Anyone else watched/watching? (Please no spoilers, I just started!)
Severance is amazing. I’m waiting for the full season 2 to be out before I watch the second season though, since I don’t like waiting a week between episodes.
Ha, yeah I’m torn on waiting. On the one hand, there is something lovely about savouring a show and pondering what’s coming/happened but on the other hand I want to know right goddamn now!
I just finished season 1… HOW ON EARTH ARE YOU STILL WAITING? I finished last night and have been waiting for this interminable workday to end so I can find out how all the craziness unfolded.
Yeah it’s not easy to wait honestly. Trying to find other shows but a lot of the other stuff is dogshit. :)
I think season 2 is probably not as good as season 1 too, it’s impossible.
