Federal agencies must “temporarily pause all activities related to obligation or disbursement of all federal financial assistance,” and any other programs that included “DEI, woke gender ideology and the Green New Deal,” Vaeth wrote.

Vaeth suggested that the pause would last until at least mid-February, asking agencies to provide a detailed report on the programmes that have been affected by 10 February.

He specifies that Medicare and Social Security benefits are not included in the pause. Other programmes through which aid “is received directly by individuals” are also exempt.

But it remains uncertain how much money is involved. The memo suggests that the federal government spent $10tn (£8tn) in fiscal year 2024, more than $3tn of which went to federal financial assistance. But the source of those numbers is unclear. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office reported that the government spent $6.7tn that year.

Trump is treating all government money as his own now. I’ll bet ya large chunks of federal money will go mysteriously missing and nobody will do anything about it.

Turns out this isn’t hyperbole, more discussion here:

all “grant, loan and federal assistance programs” for at least 90 days. This appears to include everything the federal government does beyond the salaries of federal employees, direct checks to Social Security and Medicare beneficiaries and the US military. Mainstream media journalists are calling this “temporary” or a “pause”.

In practice, it amounts to the executive illegally seizing spending authority from Congress.

As I told another poster, you have to mark it as sarcasm now. Us mods on Lemmy are few and far between and I honestly can’t tell after handling shitty trolls. People are unironically saying that stuff, so go easy on me please. It’s only a temp ban in case I goof up. No one was permanently harmed.

Information still coming in, but afaik and can tell, yes, all grants.

Effectively the University system in the US is liable to collapse as a result of this, because this also includes student loans.

This is for realsies DEFCON 1 bonkers. I work in research, its extremely expensive and mostly funded by grants, this is apocalyptic if not sorted out quickly.

I work for a Native American tribal government and they’re freaking out as well. Almost all Tribal funding is through Federal grants. Unless they have a casino or other source of income.

I’m associated with a non profit research institute who is in partner in a tribal grant looking at the climate impacts of bringing buffalo back to native lands. This is pretty much ends that program.

Another program I’m associated with is facing down losing basically %100 of the funding for that project and that’s a $50 mil program.

My guess is way longer than necessary.

He’s trying to take away Congress’s purse, so it’s pretty alarming. I think it’s more that people aren’t falling for his bs as much this time. We’re not freaking out over the little things so he’s going for the big things to get his name in the headlines.

Unfortunately, these really are big things. Universities and colleges getting shut down is pretty bad. All of the non-profits that depend on that money isn’t great either.
