Meanwhile I struggle to spend time with my family while only being a stupid little college teacher. We should all kill ourselves, we are not worthy.

I assume the berry picking was at a family farm, family farm labor has been allowed at a federal level for 12 year olds outside school hours since the FLSA was passed in 1938. Kids of all ages can have paper routes, act on stage/tv/film/radio, and work at a family business (that is non hazardous.)
