What’s a good early game food to look for?
Currently I just run around and get eggs (rarely) or fiddleheads which are not very nutritious.
I’ve found advice online to eat pine nuts from pinecones but it seems that recipe no longer exists.
I’m about to run out of protein rations, what is the best option for replacing those? Fiddleheads and eggs probably aren’t going to cut it.
I usually find cattails and process them into flour, just find the nearest swamp biome and go to town.
I agree with that too and if you really hurting for calories right now you can make starch from the rhizome too.
If you aren’t playing innawoods I would recommend maybe finding nearby houses as there is a lot of food that is going to spoil anyway. The zombies aren’t too bad in the early game and you could always kite them piecemeal or night raid without too much trouble once you get into it.
Looking through the all the underbrush can get you wild herbs which is quite versatile ingredient.
If you are near water you could and find and kill water bugs but needs to eaten sparely as emergency ration, but don’t rely on it as I have learnt that too much toxins in the mutant meat ends up having your character getting spasms which is not fun, also bug killing bonus with stockpiling chitin and sinews.
Chickens are a great source too for meat and eggs but should really be keep in a safe secure location and needs regular culling to keep the numbers and frame rate reasonable.
I guess the advice is very situational but I hope it was helpful
After running around during my first few playthroughs, I have a pretty healthy fear of confrontation so I probably won’t be raiding houses until I’ve learned more about combat. Great advice though, I didn’t know about any of these things.
kite them piecemeal
what does this mean?
Oh, trying to draw zombies away from groups to thin their numbers, something I do to get a foothold in a new area if I arrive at day time to explore.
You do get big hordes in the cities and towns and it is a lot harder to do later in the game but you can also separate groups by drawing a few off the group at a time to weaken the group.
So i guess make use of the zombies sight and smell senses and pull a few zombies at a time than trying to kill a whole lot of zombies at one
Also want to say that it does get easier once you’re more familiar to the game.
I mean I surprised myself when my character heard “Bark” noise notification, and I fortunately I knew what it meant that as I had scouted an enemy that I don’t want to spoil was near by.
It tracked me down during the night, luckily my character wasn’t sleeping and I went out, unsure of odds, and beat it - largely in part to the quarterstaff I had just built( really good early training weapon : good accuracy, decent damage , block and a sweep attack)
