Given the recent Proton controversy, I imagine quite a few people are trying to jump ship on their services. I myself was already in the process of something similar for different reasons, and looking over the services I believe addy.io to be a better fit for me than simplelogin (or Eforw, which I haven’t heard much about in general, but I have a membership with) And so I would like to ask the community here about their thoughts and experiences of and with addy.io

If you’re able to explain their ownership structure and the like too, that would be appreciated, given that proton is a non-profit, which is an upside for it.

I’ve been using it recently to create an alias for each service I’ve signed up for. I don’t see anything wrong with them yet.

Addy.io is also open source, so I guess that’s reassuring. I can’t think of any reason not to use it.

I’ve used this service for three years. I used the free version for a couple months and then upgraded to the paid plan. It’s awesome. The support is very responsive as well the 1 time I had an issue. And the problem wasn’t on their end. I have 1 domain for my email on Mailbox.org, and another domain with MX setup for addy.io. So when I want to make a new email I just type one in on the fly. Don’t have to create one on the site or extension first.

I can’t talk about their ownership structure. Seems to be one person or maybe a small team. But that’s just a guess.

I’m very happy with it. Also used it for three years with no issue. Proton is probably more “private” but I hated not being able to use a third party mail application like Thunderbird. And using the bridge app was too annoying. Also, proton calendars sucked at the time. Mailbox is just caldav and I have no issues with external invites. Honestly, most people’s risk vector is going to be fine to not be on Proton or the like. Mailbox will let you auto encrypt everything with PGP as well, but you have to give them your private key which to me, made it less secure so I just turned that off.

Its quite good. Its ran by a single person and is self hostable (I think).

There’s not much difference besides the plans, so if the proton controversy is enough for you to jump ship then by all means, do it

It’s not just the controversy, but I’ve been planning a re-do of my internet services for a while now, and this seemed a good time to ask around, given others are likely doing the same

Well then i recommend addyio, bitwarden, tuta/mailbox/posteo whatever, and ente auth (or aegis/2fas but you need to manually back them up)
