    Tolkien preferred to write what he called “fairy stories”, where even though there was death and despair in the plot, there was a resolution and some type of happy ending. It’s why he decided to not write his idea of a sequel to LotR because it hit too close to reality and undid the closure.

    If America is Gondor in this analogy, then I suppose the bigger battle with Sauron is climate change. Only there are no hobbits and a fool’s plan in the background to make it all work. Maybe in our reality the Shire was scoured first, wiping out that hope.
