The Laken Riley Act sparks debate on immigration enforcement and public safety. Does empowering local police reduce crime or create fear and legal conflicts? Is there evidence that undocumented immigrants commit more crimes, or is this a political narrative? How can the U.S. balance security with humanitarian concerns?

Is there evidence that undocumented immigrants commit more crimes, or is this a political narrative?

It’s a lie. Immigrants have a lower crime rate than US citizens.

This is intended as an act of performative sadism to appease racists and xenophobes.

How can the U.S. balance security with humanitarian concerns?

The Trump administration is anti-humanitarian. So the way to restore balance is to drive them out of office and make sure they can never come back.

The best ways to reduce immigration are to allow undocumented workers to unionize (which will drive up their wages and make them harder to exploit), and to make employers criminally liable for employing them. And longer-term, there needs to be a simpler, fairer system for law-abiding undocumented people to become US citizens.

    Also, MAGA delenda est.

It’s performative legislature. It doesn’t address an actual problem, it hijacks an outlier event for the pathos alone, and it targets the wrong things.

And it’s a Republican bill. But I repeat myself.
