Having just experienced my first comment removals without any sort of notification or explanation, I was suddenly reminded of how things went down on Reddit during the API thing and people’s attitude towards it.
Do you know why the API thing failed to cause a mass exodus? Because the moderators were spearheading it. The same people that have been doing things like setting up automod with buzzwords because they’re too busy collecting subs to control to actually do their jobs, and silently removing non rule breaking comments without notification or explanation, and being cold unfriendly dickheads whenever you questioned them; suddenly these assholes were asking us to all join them in solidarity and feel sorry for them over their lost modding tools in 3rd party apps. In fact they did a fantastic job of making it all about themselves without giving many good reasons for the end user. And honestly people cheered when Reddit forcibly removed them.
And it made me realise that a good majority of these moderators that spent years on Reddit campaigning for less transparency and helping to turn it into the shit hole it is now, are probably here on Lemmy.
I don’t know where exactly I’m going with this other than to say that I’m seeing things here with new eyes now. Just wanted to get these fun facts off my chest and remind everyone about who we’re actually dealing with here.

That example gave hope for the fact that power tripping mods can’t act as powerful as on Reddit
Comment removal happens on Lemmy too, sometimes with a cited ‘no reason’ because some butthurt person got compelled to report your disagreement with their world view.
Ah, so basically, in addition to blocking the community in question, I probably need to somehow label and remember the user that was having a ‘discussion’ with me and avoid interacting with them in future.
The only people worse than these clowns that will have a ‘discussion’ with you while downvoting everything you say are clowns that will have a ‘discussion’ with you while reporting any comment they don’t like.
Tbf, I believe it’s the automod. I dunno what happens when/ if/ after a human mod reviews the comment. Maybe a mod can chime in.

In my experience of being a reveddit watcher on Reddit, they’ll literally never address the removed comment unless you specifically contact them about it. I dunno, maybe my comments have been restored or addressed but I blocked the community.
Moderators here have even less reason to use an automod that cannot detect context or nuance, because there’s like 20 people in total making comments anywhere. And I don’t need to put up with this shit.
Any message board without moderation will turn into 4chan sooner or later.
Be the change you want to see. Be a mod, start and nurture a community. Otherwise you’re just bitching for no reason.
Oh is it? I’m “bitching for no reason” in a community called ‘Off my Chest’? And users that make up the vast majority and are actually the whole reason the platform even exists and succeeds in the first place aren’t allowed to criticize moderators? So, do you apply that ‘logic’ to real life too? Do you go around telling people who are complaining about Trump to become politicians or else shut the fuck up?
Yeah, that doesn’t work for me. I don’t need to be a moderator to recognise a shitty moderator and call them out.
