The new HHS secretary has made baseless claims that the drugs are addictive and cause violent behavior.

Them wellness farms are just concentration camps with extra steps. If you take away my Lexapro I’ll go back to the homicidal fantasies about murdering people in power, only now I’m old enough to buy guns.

This kind of feels like blowback from misinformation campaigns presumably designed and targeted at the Third World.

Discontinuation syndrome is corp speak for withdrawal, as it’s softer and sells more pills. However, SSRIs don’t have the type of action on dopamine that makes them habit-forming. This makes SSRIs easier to let go of psychologically than coffee or the internet, but not necessarily easier to let go physiologically, as many folks who have tried to get off of them can attest too.

As for violence. Depression is a cluster of five coping mechanisms. Anger is another one. When we’re afraid, we can both fight or freeze, right. Anyway, if the underlying stress isn’t resolved, playing with a person’s neurotransmitters can make them more prone to a fight response than a freeze response. This is one of the factors at play in increased suicide risk when starting an anti-depressant. And there are studies demonstrating increased risk of violent outbursts. However, that doesn’t make the SSRI the cause of violence. The underlying distress is. Which is often societal inequity, oppression, suppression, etc.

Anyway, I’m surprised pharma and other industries are so quiet on all of this. Anti-depressants make them a lot of money. And keep the gears of capitalism grinding.
