I joined Reddit mostly because of one specific game focused community. When they went private during the protest and migrated to Lemmy, I followed suit. While Lemmy doesn’t have a lot of the functions Reddit had, I like it here more and want to stay.

After reading a bit about the protest, it resonated with me and in an attempt to support it I deleted my 7 year old account with all the content on it.

Now, I found out the said community will be opening their Subreddit again in a few days. They will keep their Lemmy instance open but I feel like the majority of people will return to Reddit because there’s years of content there already while they would have to build everything from scratch here.

I respect their decision but I feel fucking betrayed and need to went. Sorry if I chose the wrong place to do so.

Update: Not that anyone cares but it all went pretty much as I predicted. As soon as the subreddit re-opened the Lemmy community completely died. Even the mods don’t bother posting latest patch notes.

r/RedDevils only committed to 48 hours, but I know my time on Reddit is done once RIF is gone so setup a new community here. There will always be people who go back because it’s what they know, but there will be plenty of people who leave when the third party apps are killed off. Best thing to do in the meantime is advertise on the subreddit, especially if you see anyone criticising Reddit/mods for reopening/etc

I liked the smaller subreddits because it felt like when someone posted it was for excitement or information. But since RIF will be dead, I won’t be going back. I’ve kept trying to use their main app over the years and always end up deleting it and staying on RIF for a few more years before trying again. I’m sad, but I do enjoy it here. Just wish more people were here and posted in certain communities

I’m not a big football fan, but I am from Belgium so I was getting ready to subscribe to support your efforts and our national team.

I wasn’t aware Red Devils is also the name for ManU. Does that often lead to confused fans?

Not sure if it ever happened on Reddit, though it’s the first I’ve heard off on here 😀 guess you’re a United fan now 😉

The reason for using Red Devils is because r/ManchesterUnited was a bit of an unmoderated shitstorm, so r/RedDevils was created with more stringent posting rules. That’s why I went with it, so those coming over from Reddit could find it easily

I can only accept my fate. Is it a problem that the last game I watched was City winning the CL?

          Thanks for the background!

The official subreddit for the Belgian team is apparently BelgiumNT. I only checked that now, that’s how invested I am in the sport.

I believe most if not all subreddits specified the period to go dark. I’d count on thier statement even if they said for good since reddit managment can override their promise.

Do your part and start the sub here. They might engage if they see content being posted.

I see. Then I misunderstood the goal of the protest. It was my understanding that to show the disagreement with the API pricing changes subreddits will go dark for a specified period of time to show the scope of the support this sentiment has, and if nothing will change, they will remain dark or take more drastic steps.

If you organise a protest in your workplace and the management doesn’t budge to your demands, the usual next step is a mass leave of the employees.

I was expecting the same to happen here because otherwise I see no point of going dark in the first place.

Of course, Reddit can override this and reopen the subs, which is when you just mass delete everything or replace it with gibberish.

I see where you’re coming from. Some even said they would go dark indefinitely. However, as I understood from another post, that reddit admins removed mods and reopend subs.

I think they wanted to stop/delay reddit going IPO by scaring potential buyers or force management to eliminate this concept in the near future.

Are they re-opening properly, or doing a protest/malicious compliance version? E.g. Steam is open but now they’re all posting about water vapour instead of games.

So far it seems as normal re-opening. There’s a still a few days to go so maybe they’ll change their minds and at least go into a read only mode, if that’s possible.

Build the community you want hear and in time people will come and this time it will be owned by the community and not a faceless corporation

The admins are also forcing the subs open, mods who don‘t do it themselves get replaced.

Anyway, the best course of action is to thrive independently. Community is where people are and while surely these little addicts are now on Reddit again, they can and will come here if we make it interesting to be here and meanwhile Reddit/spez does even more dumb shit. Which with the looming IPO is all but guaranteed.

There likely will be another flood of users over to Lemmy once the API changes formally occur in July. The mods and power users will find themselves handicapped without their tools and more will migrate.

My fave subreddit has not participated in the balackout and I hate to leave it - I’ve learned so much there. I’ll probably set up a similar community here, but arguably there will be far less people posting & reading for the coming months, and thus: less knowledgeable responses.

But I expect the end of the month, and the accompanying ban of external apps and mod tools, to create a new influx. I’ll stay in that subreddit to pijt people towards Lemmy.
