Summary
Japan is battling its largest wildfire in over 30 years, with flames spreading across 1,200 hectares (3,000 acres) in Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture.
The fire has forced the evacuation of over 1,000 residents, damaged more than 80 buildings, and resulted in one death.
Ofunato’s record-low rainfall and rising temperatures have worsened conditions.
Japan saw 1,300 wildfires in 2023, with most occurring from February to April.
