Burrowing Owl. No Deep Woods. No Boreal Forest. No Wetlands. No Tree Cavities. No migrating to the Arctic. What a totally cool and extraordinarily unique Owl. They do like arid desert conditions, open grasslands, unplowed prairies. On a birding adventure through the Salton Sea area in Imperial County at the southern end of California last April, I observed that their preferred wintering burrow were farm culverts and drain-pipe entrances. A birding friend and I saw 68 of them within just a few miles. I’ve now seen Burrowing Owls in California and Anahuac, Texas and the Fort Pierre National Grasslands in South Dakota.
This owl looks so thoughtful. I wonder what’s on their mind. “Maybe I’ll go for a mouse later today. Yes, that sounds like a good plan.”
I can’t believe I forgot Burrow Owl yesterday when mentioning most expressive owl faces! 😮. They should absolutely be on there!
