    What actually happened here? Aside from the shifter deciding it wanted to take a nap.

      It looks like he accidentally downshifted. He starts out pretty slow, and manages to redline pretty quickly, shifts and then it pretty much redlines immediately and breaks.

        I don’t think that’s what happened here. The sound doesn’t really match a money shift. It’s usually more of a “wheeee” instead of a plain bang. It also wouldn’t explain why his shifter was moving like that. Looks to me more like the gearbox broke or his engine just grenaded from being redlined too hard and knocked out the shifter linkage. I could see it happen since this appears to be a FWD car.
