i don’t want to make advertising, but i found an affordable product for backpacker : a 12 inch tablet with a weight of 520g.
When a 10 inch tablet is 400g, and a 13.3 inch laptop is nearly 1kg, a 12 inch/520g is a good screen size weight/ratio. What do you think ? (Note : no direct advertising for a product, only features and why it could be a good product for backpacker)

Are people backpacking with laptops and tablets? Like for wilderness backpacking, not hostel hopping through Europe backpacking? When I’m in the woods the last thing I want to look at is a glowing screen.

yea, unless I was glamping, I don’t think I’d bring any electronics beyond a phone into a long nature trip. I was assuming hostel-backpacking

backpacker can be also a long-term travellers who just want a backpack, hike from time to time, but have also a kind of entertainement when hostel hopping. Depends on your priority indeed

I have a foldable cellphone. It’s a good alternative to a tablet and a phone.

For my more backcountry / splitboarding trips I could see a tablet being more and more useful but for hiking I’m good with just my phone

A phone + foldable keyboard weights less and you can do more with it (a real keyboard!), a Linux phone configured to look like a desktop is a very lightweight alternative to a laptop. And full featured, with a real OS.

i guess you are young and have a very good eye vision : unfortunately, you will understand later that a phone to read long text, watch small videos…becomes less and less possible.

it’s a multi-usage tablet : you can cut bread, play pingpong, put your butts on it, an umbrella for sun, a mirror… amazing what you can do with a 12 inch tablet 😁

I have traveled with “small” laptops before, and never really understood the hassle of having multiple devices (tablet, keyboard, etc) to poorly approximate a thing that is important to my interests. That being said, I’ve definitely known folks who only ever used a tablet and were plenty happy for their lifestyle/interests.
