The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy. Sensing that his end is near, the Undead King, one of the Dark Lords trying to take over the world, uses a reincarnation spell to return 1,000 years later. He awakens to a world at war with mysterious creatures called The Void.

I read volume 1 and I’m halfway through volume 2. I’m not sold on this one. The main sticking point for me is that the protagonist has been reborn as a 10 year old human boy (instead of his previous immortal Undead King self) and has his human emotions reawakened. So one minute he’s reflecting on how he single-handedly destroyed armies mercilessly in his past life, the next he’s getting bashful because a girl got too close.

It also seems like they’re building him up to be a faux villain who was just misunderstood or whatever in his past life. He wants to rule (both in his past and present life), but his goals beyond that are kinda vague. I guess I’ll stick with it a bit longer and see how it goes.

Oh God, that’s one of those I should add to my LN pet peeves post. But I guess that falls under the “passive main characters” category as well. If LN characters are written as a self-insert how socially inept have the Japanese target audience have to be…

Due to the release of a certain ARPG, I didn’t read much this week. The only LN I’ve read was Enough with This Slow Life! I Was Reincarnated as a High Elf and Now I’m Bored: Volume 2. This series has an interesting quirk that I haven’t seen anywhere else yet. The story is written from a macro point of view. Entire decades are flying by in single chapters. As an example:

    spoiler

this volume starts with MC picking up a little boy, at the end of the volume the boy is in his 30s or so.

4/10 timeless elves, plus a bonus point for the uniqueness.

    ~Paladin’s Grace, by T Kingfisher

I’m not sure exactly how I feel about it. I’m about 80% through with it and I feel like my wife pulled a fast-one on me by recommending it. It has interesting characters and the author is fairly insightful and humorous, but so far it seems like a really soft-core romance novel leading up to a big sex scene and a ‘happily ever after’.

I’ll report back when finished in a few hours.~

Scratch that, just read the sidebar and realized this was for novels translated from Japan. My mistake. :(

This week I read the three volumes of The weakest tamer began a journey to pick up trash. I remember picking it up after reading the available manga chapters, but completely forgot about it until the Play Store popped up the third volume in my suggestions. A sweet story, more slice of life than anything. Conflict is present, but luckily solved relatively quickly without too much hassle. I am usually easy to please, so take my 8/10 with a grain of salt.

Tomorrow comes out (already pre-ordered), the sixth volume of Minecraft Isekai Survival in another world with my mistress. Kind of excited about it. The story is ok (it could honestly do without the harem, not really a fan of those), but the way it is narrated is absolutely hilarious for me.

Also tomorrow, the fourth volume of The conqueror from a dying kingdom is out. I really can’t wait. I remember reading the description for the first volume and being vaguely intrigued; 8 hours later I already blew in the three available books. Absolutely recommended, the world building is phenomenal.

Last volume of So I’m A Spider, So What… wow what an unbelievably mediocre end to the series. Pointless battles, handwaved solutions to major conflicts, and a lack of long anticipated emotional reunions. Hell, half the epilogue was the same repeated statement that characters were never seen again. Not that I’m surprised, the series started strong, peaked early, then went down hill after that, but I was still hoping for at least a little meaningful satisfaction at the end. 3/5 for the Lightnovel and the series as a whole.

I dropped it the after the volume where almost the entire thing was just from the side story’s POV. I always thought I should maybe pick it up again, but reading your post now I’m happy that I didn’t.
