It’s always annoyed me that you see the recommendation to get a “side hustle” to get ahead… when in reality you need that “side hustle” just to afford basic cost of living. At that point it’s not a hustle, it’s literally survival.
Side note: I saw a post / tweet / comment somewhere that pointed out how depressing the phrase “cost of living” is when you think about it. I wish I could remember it verbatim because I often do think about that phrase and get a bit sad.
In short: Nearly 9 per cent of workers aged between 20 to 24 are working multiple jobs – more than any other demographic
…
“A lot of people my age are hustling, but a lot of it’s sort of unavoidable,” she said.
“We need to hustle in order to pay rent, pay food, and just like survive out here.”
Alternarive title: new generations are so utterly fucked that they’re forced to work multiple jobs to earn the right to survive in the dystopian hellscape that’s been created before their birth.
Such a boomer statement calling it a hustle.
You’re just not a go getter! /s
“Willing to do what they need to”. You misspelled “forced”, ABC
Perhaps some survivorship bias in the article.
Gotta contribute something, somewhere. But there should be no full time job that doesn’t pay someone enough to pay rent and eat and have a little pocket money.
Can’t free load, but can’t need 2 jobs just to buy groceries either.

Well with the quintessential aussie “side hustle” of having an investment property now out of reach more than ever its no surprise Gen Z are turning elsewhere.
Hustlers now? Hah
I am waiting for Gen Z to just start rioting in the streets to claim some kind of fairness back.
They really have no chance.
They are more likely to just rope in solitude… if they’re lucky enough to have enough space for that.
This is the best summary I could come up with:
But the demand has grown, and, not willing to pass up the extra income, she now adds “lasagne dealer” to her list of jobs, which also includes support worker, and running a bi-monthly pop-up kitchen at a local bar.
Recent ABS data shows the number of Australians working multiple jobs has reached a record high with an estimated 947,300, or 6.6 per cent of the workforce, now holding more than one form of employment.
Australian Youth Affairs Coalition co-chair Sarah Ramantanis said she had seen the number of young people juggling several jobs increase since before the pandemic.
With a jump in living costs for employees – up 9.6 per cent over the year to June — Ms Ramantanis said many young people had been left with no choice but to seek out more work.
A quick tour through the Brisbane bar where Mr Corvo works reveals a cohort sharing a similar story.
ABS data shows the Agricultural, Forestry and Fishing sector had the highest rate of multiple job holders, at 9.2 per cent.
I’m a bot and I’m open source!
