Before watching the movie i first watched an episode of The Munsters TV show to better familiarize myself with the material.
And truthfully, the movie actually feels like the show.
Herman Munster is just like the Fred Gwyne character. Albeit younger but same personality and same mannerisms. Just younger.
The Count SOUNDS similar to Al Lewis but unfortunately fails in the looks department. His personality isn’t at all like Al’s but that could be due to the setting.
Sherri Zombie as Lily is a really odd choice and feels like Nepotism given Rob’s involvement however she does the role well and she’s delightful.
The cinematography was touted as awful and well i’ll admit it is. But it’s also just very zany and dramatic at times often utilizing 60s and 70s film techniques (e.g closeups and black background effects.) It’s wacky but it works. Although at times it feels like Rob stretched his budget and had to make do. It’s your standard Rob Zombie film.
Plot wise, it’s a PREQUEL to the TV series. It takes place at LEAST 10 years before the show which could account for the odd appearance of The Count, And the Youthful persona of the main cast. (Which must be taken into account). It follow them meeting and them eventually moving to Hollywood.
There are moments in the movie I ACTUALLY laughed at, granted I like dumb movies like Disaster Movie or Nacho Libre. But my sense of humor isn’t extremely low brow. Scenes where the assistant of Not Dr Frankenstein accidently switches the brains of a genius and comedic genius made me chuckle. Or Orlock’s rat family and his dancing. The comedy in the movie is actually chuckle worthy.
The movie is dumb and crude but it’s enjoyable. It’s just a cute love story of how Lily met Herman. They’re “teenagers” in love and it’s cute. I mean…
#THERE IS A TAP DANCING MONKEY.
The goth atmosphere is superb! And clearly all the budget went to it. They reuse locations however and film on public property at times…so it clearly didn’t have a large budget as mentioned. They scrapped by with what they could do.
The plot is nonsensical It’s wacky. There is no bad guy. There is no evil plot. It’s just good fun and good comedy.
I didn’t like the musical parts however thrown in. I understand it, but it just felt forced and didn’t really connect and felt out of place.
The acting is lousy, the camera work is amateurish, the special effects are terrible and cheap, the script is nonexistent however the staff clearly loved the source material and just wanted to have fun. And that’s what this movie is, it’s just fun.
And I totally see this becoming a cult classic in the future to those who are willing to give it a chance.
