So I just had a curious conversation with my wife. She is getting swimming lessons and complained that she is forgetting to blow water out of her nose when surfacing. I laughed and asked why she would not keep her nose closed, to which she told me that I’m a creep and the only person she knows who can close his nose with just facial muscles. It can’t be true, right? Right?
If I suck air in through my nose with a lot of force and squinch my face up all tight I can allllmost do it lol, but it’s not keepin’ any water out.
I’m thinkin’ you’re a rare breed.
what do you mean by closing?
Do you mean, just control that water does not go through your nose, or do you really like squeez your nose like you would with your fingers?
Mmm… so when I contract muscles on my face I can make it’s impossible to breathe thru my nose. Visually it’s like parts above nose arches just contract a bit inwards. Nothing drastic.
Post a pic of your closed nose

Wh…what do you mean? I mean I can swim with my head under water and not have any water go up my nose, but it’s not like it’s closed or anything…
Sorry, but you’re a freak of nature.
I close my nose with my upper lip. Works very well.
Me too! It’s pretty funny to see people wondering what the hell you’re doing

I do it. But my family always had who’s nose is bigger wars and we learned to flair and close our noses at a young age.
Plus I’ve been swimming since before I could walk so, there’s that.
haha what? ive never heard of that.
What I’d do when diving is go underwater, then breathe out a little air through my nose, so the air stays inside my nostrils and kind of “seals” my nose to water. but this only works as long as you don’t turn upside down
TIL people can’t close their nasal passages voluntarily.
Brother?
This guy is talking about getting water out of the nostrils themselves , not the nasal passage. If you don’t breathe out bwforyou breathe in while swimming, you’ll inhale the water in your nostrils.
