Whazzup everybody? I like books (and edibles) so when I saw this community I wanted to contribute. I just finished Artemis by Andy Weir, a sci fi novel about a young delivery worker/smuggler who gets entangled in a plot to change the balances of power on the Moon’s only city.
I picked up The Deepest South of All by Richard Grant at Ollie’s for a few bucks the other day and have started that. It tells the tales of various people the author meets in Natchez, Mississippi and explores how it’s slavery centric past still influences the area today.
What are you all reading? How big is your backlog? I started explicitly keeping a physical backlog when I buy new media because I’m 100% that guy who’ll put it up and forget forever. haha
I’m reading “The Storyteller” by Dave Grohl. Actually, I’m listening to it because my only reading time is going to my Master’s degree courses … then I’ll be able to do some personal reading again.

Rereading the cradle series to catch back up and read the new book Waybound. Have a decent sized backlog, and was looking at Bookwyrm as a federated goodreads alternative

It’s great so far!
Just finished Eyes of the Void, another great sci-fi book by Adrian Tchaikofsky (part 2 of The Final Architecture trilogy). Very much recommended for people looking for space opera in the vein of The Expanse. It’s about a future where aliens and humans co-exist and godlike beings as big as moons called Architects are randomly destroying sentient worlds, seemingly without reason.
Now I’m reading The Stranger Times by C.K. McDonnell, which is urban fantasy very much in line with Neil Gaiman or Ben Aaronovitch. It’s about people working at a tabloid newspaper that publishes supposed news-stories about supernatural/alien encounters and accidentally stumbles upon a real one. So far, the book is not as funny as it wants to be, but very entertaining nonetheless.

This review made me laugh, then I thought “This comment is probably funnier than the book,” and that made me laugh again.
Good times haha.
It’s not that bad, I did have to chuckle a few times. But the author tries really hard to make every single character into some sort of quirky caricature.
The Fifth Head of Cerberus has been fascinating so far, about two-thirds of the way through. Hopefully there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, but it certainly lives up to the author’s reputation.

I didn’t like Artemis, but I love Project Hail Mary.
I just finished “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien. It’s a series of haunting (and sometimes poetic) stories from the author’s experiences as an American soldier during the Vietnam War.
I just started “Because Our Fathers Lied” by Craig McNamara. It’s about his growing up in the shadow of his father, Robert MacNamara, a Secretary of Defense and one of the architects of the Vietnam War (which the son and his friends were opposed to).
My backlog is digital, since the only way I’ll end up actually getting reading done these days is if it’s on my phone. If I hear about something interesting (usually either an NPR interview or mentioned online), I’ll either buy ebooks for Kindle (if they’re on sale) or obtain epub/mobi’s from other sources. I try not to do this too often, since it takes me a while to get through things. I think I have a dozen or so items in the backlog at the moment.
I have a Nook Oasis that I really should use more, it’s really nice and I got a good deal on it but I’m just traditional with my preference for a book ass book I guess.
I’ve got House of Leaves coming any day now.
I was looking for some interesting horror, and this seemed to be a consistent recommendation.
No idea what it’s actually about, other than a bunch of separate stories being intertwined, and a house that’s bigger on the inside than it looks on the outside.
Hopefully it’s good 😅
House of Leaves is the first book in a very long time that seriously messed with my head. It’s best to go into it blind, and experience the whole thing as brand new.
It is an exceptional book.
