Explanation: Romans had a taste for garum, fermented fish paste. They put it on everything - bread, meat, fruit, even in their wine! Garum was considered so vital that it was a part of many slaves’ rations; and while low-quality garum was everywhere, high quality garum, like high-quality wine, could go for truly exorbitant prices - some garum off the coast of modern Portugal went for 1000 sestercii for a gallon and a half - over a year’s wages for a common worker!
When you try to explain the health and libido benefits of fermented fish guts to barbarii:

Dic iterum!
Season 1 was so much better than Season 2. Actual spoken Latin was a fantastic choice for the Romans.
I love when Varus is like “stop speaking latin. you make it sound like shit.” or something. It’s been a while since I watched it.
He says something like “Speak to my translator, I’d rather hear a barbarian tongue than you butcher Latin like that” to the turncoat Germanic tribesman Segestes, it was such a fantastic moment.
They really made Varus such an excellent depiction of Roman arrogance, but without stripping him of humanity. He really ends up as just a genuinely pompous man, but one still with feelings, internal values, loved ones, etc.
What series?
Barbarians. First season is good, if a little loose with the actual history. Second season isn’t worth the time to watch it.
y’all act like it’s gross, while have no problem drinking fermented grain juice, rotten grape, fermented milk…
that fish fermentation is special, as it is fermented using the fish own gut enzymes, breaking down proteins into amino acids.
the end result is a salty and incredibly umami sauce that will make ant savoury dish much more delicious.
Like Worcestershire?
more like thai fish sauce (practically the same thing), a stronger version of soy sauce
Next you’ll tell me de gustibus non disputandem est!
dummodo garum edas sicut verus Romanus
Shoutout to Pearlmania500
Y’all got any more of that ::scratch:: garum??
