DAY 13 of the 30 Day Song Challenge, alternative music styles!
Hard to top yesterday’s, but then you and your partner done get hitched!!! What alternative song MUST be played at the wedding???
Each day I’ll post the challenge and you share some of your favorite alternative & indie songs that meet the challenge!
❤️TAINTED LOVE❤️
This one is pretty easy for me.
When we got married, I DJ’d our own wedding with a series of playlists for each part of the night. Then we gave out a mixtape that represented tracks from the night.
From there, every year on our anniversary, we make another playlist. We’ve been married 15 years, so that’s 16 mixtapes of music. The whole thing is right here, all 16 - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5sXokGoRzMdrT7CykXmfx2?si=f8c05f8ea7004f3d
If I had to pick 1 song, it would be the lead off song, Decemberists “The Crane Wife 1 & 2”. https://songwhip.com/the-decemberists/the-crane-wife-1-and-2
The Crane Wife story and then album were part of our relationship while we were dating, then the night the Decemberists came to town touring the Crane Wife, that was the night I proposed, then we went to go see them. We still have the concert posters from that night up in our bedroom.
So yeah.
That’s pretty awesome. I like that you’ve kept the tradition up for your anniversaries too.
I am a music obsessive. But to be honest my choices might make my wife’s ears bleed. At least she is cool with me blaring music through the house every chance I get.
haha! We each definitely have music that’s not each other’s fave (you’ll notice Yes has yet to show up on the playlist lol). But we love music and love listening to music together at home and in the car, so when songs connect with us we jot it down! We also have fun with themes some years. Like for our 15th anni, we did 15 songs that had a number in them that went in order one to fifteen! It’s fun to build the playlists together and share with family and friends. <3
Don’t judge me, but we did have our dj play this at our wedding. The family was suitably confused. :)
They might be giants - She’s an angel
no judgement for TMBG
@ren There are so many good ones, but this song has been on every Valentines/romance/unrequited love mixtape/playlist I have ever made.
The Replacements- Valentine
Yes yes yes. Paul Westerberg. Always so cynical and yet also sentimental.
I think this is the perfect wedding song: “Onward” by Yes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNrX6xaSDdgoh lord, if I start finding more Yes fans in here, I may really start neglecting other social networks lol
My wife and I danced to this as our last dance during our wedding:
This was our first dance at our wedding. It was between that and The Luckiest by Ben Folds. Lee won the battle of the Bens that time though.
nice! our first dance was “Sugar In My Bowl” by Nina Simone. It’s a sweet song that’s also subversively sexual.
I don’t think I’m ever going to get married at this point, but I always enjoyed Bif Naked’s - “Lucky”.
I’d probably request one of the worst songs in the genre…

I don’t think marriage is for me.
for a moment I thought you had linked to this truly unique love song by The Mountain Goats
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irDtV3nfBQwYea, but that’s one of the best songs in genre, I posted one of the worst… Coincidentally the opener on this Bloodhound Gang album is called ‘I hope you die’ (as is the verse in the Goats song) and is a fun (still shitty) song on a otherwise unfun(ny) crap album.
Wait, is there some Mountain Goats & Bloodhound Gang connection in not aware of?
Oh man… my english becomes quite bad when I’m high. What I tried to say is: In the “No Children” song by ‘The Mountain Goats’ there is a verse that goes: “I hope you die”. On the ‘Bloodhoung Gang’ album the opener is called “I hope you die”.
That’s all the connection there is… hopefully, since I like the Mountain Goats.
Cool cool cool. Thanks for explaining.
find someone who gets it. ;)
oh, I have those (most of the time)… it’s just the ceremony that I don’t want to go through…
we kept ours very low key, small group, a little underground winery place.
a friend of ours is just doing a courthouse wedding, then throwing a party at their house a couple weeks later.
Really hard to say. Maybe “All I Need” by Radiohead, but I feel it’s too negative.
I also think “80” by Green Day would be perfect, but it was written for Billie Joe’s girlfriend, Adie, so it might not feel personal enough.
