Hello. Have some tea, take a cookie *), tell us something.
-
How did you get your DS/3DS handheld? (If you’ve only played one on a trade show, or are only thinking of maybe getting one, that’s cool too.)
-
Your favorite game?
-
An underrated game or one everyone should try?
-
Any particular memories?
-
Playing anything at the moment?
*) Yea ok you can have another. Keep in mind they’re virtual.
Hello 👋
- I got into handhelds with a Gameboy color when I was little. Back then I got pokemon yellow and cristal, Zelda oracle of seasons and oracle of ages, lion king and alone in the dark. Now I own few Gameboys, pokemon mini, a Switch and a 3DS I use a lot travelling.
- Zelda Oracle of Ages for nostalgia reasons.
- If you ever find a Boktai Gameboy advance cartridge, get it. I found interesting the gameplay with the light sensor.
- In 2017 got my console back from a box and started collecting a lot of Gameboy games (mostly color, but some for the advance). Got into modding and selling consoles for a while, which was fun.
- At the moment invested in TotK, but on the 3Ds I’ve recently finished Picross 3D 100%. I’m gonna miss it as a casual game, so any recommendations are welcomed 😁
Ok, I want to let my fanboysm down and not mention Jump Ultimate Stars game in almost all the points, so here we go:
-
DS, It was gifted for me from a sister, I had a GBA advance at the time, and the touchscreen is what it sold me, I don’t remember any game in particular, maybe Mario Kart or any first party game tbh.
-
Although I mentioned JUS it is really a though question, I enjoyed a lot the AA Trilogy in my DS and Metroid Prime Hunters online multiplayer as well as Mario Kart, I still think JUS is better because it is so niche and it hasn’t yet a proper sequel unlike almost every other famous DS game.
-
JUS ;) and Time Hollow and Hotel Dusk (I know they have their fanbase, but I don’t remember hidden gems for now).
-
Well, DS online gaming was peak online gaming for me, although it wasn’t perfect I preferred it over, let’s say Call of Duty on PS3, It really hit me when Nintendo closed their servers, gladly the community picked up right after with custom servers, and they keep working fine for most popular games.
-
I’m playing JUS online with the folks that want to play nowadays shamelessly sharing Discord group. but I’m also playing Chrono Trigger for first time ever.
Online DS huh? That’s interesting
It is hard to achieve nowadays because you need a WEP capable router or set it passwordless, you can use your cellphone as a hotspot as well.
And you can even use it with an emulator, although I’m not very experienced on that field.
Sounds like a drag. Any idea if that is the case with DS games on 3DS as well?
Maybe we could do a DS/3DS multiplayer thread to get people together…
It is, only DS games suffer from this, 3DS games still have functional servers, I can’t talk for all the games for sure.
-
- I have a DSi and a 3ds. I’m dating myself but I bought the 3ds with my internship money and later got a new 3ds with money from my first full-time job.
- I don’t know if it’s my favourite but Pokemon X certainly has the most hours sunk into hatching eggs and chasing shinies
- There were a variety of eshop games that really utilized the 3d effect well. Pushmo comes to mind but I’m sure there are others.
- Nothing besides being generally baffled at why the power of 3d in the palm of your hand was being ridiculed by the gaming community. I now know it’s probably 3d fatigue from all the 3d movies/TVs/etc around that time.
- I dug my 3ds back out with the eshop shutdown and have been playing FFTA2 lately.
I like 3D. I don’t know why it gets so much flak. True, the whole industry jumped onto it without figuring out the details and just wanting to sell sell sell… Which didn’t work. But the idea isn’t bad.
-
Got my original DS as a kid as a christmas present, it’s crazy to me how old the original DS is now. Got the New 2DS XL later on when I was in university since I wanted to play the Pokémon games.
-
In general it’s probably one of the Phantasy Star games or Bayonetta 1, but for the DS specifically it’s got to be Phantasy Star Zero.
-
Definitely Phantasy Star Zero on the DS for people who like ARPG dungeon crawlers! It’s not incredibly content rich but it’s a cute little game that you can put a lot of hours into if you like looters.
-
Playing Pokémon Platinum back when forum communities like Bulbapedia were huge is probably my favourite DS memories. I just loved how tight-knit everything felt when you had Pokémon friends back then.
-
Was playing Phantasy Star Zero recently but been busy, but I should really get back to it.
Phantasy Star on DS? Well who knew, I certainly didn’t.
-
-
I personally have 2 N3DSs (1 USA, 1 JPN model) & a DS Lite. I got the USA model from a local shop (it wasn’t in great condition, but everything works, the C stick drifts badly though.) I got the Japan model from a lovely retro game shop on eBay, it’s in really good condition, except for the screens (they were yellowed, but otherwise flawless.) I got the DS Lite from the same local shop as my 3DS, it’s a beautiful red/black model in decent condition.
-
My favorite game is probably a tie between Rocket Slime, Club Penguin: Elite Penguin Force, and Fire Emblem: Awakening. I admit, nostalgia plays quite a lot in my opinion lol.
-
Out of the games I’ve recently played, I’ll throw in any of the Shantae games — they’re soo good. I think the 3DS game was only available on the eShop though.
-
I’ll give you all a quick sob story. When I was like 6 or 8 years old, or something, I had brought my DS with me to the store, and when I going back into my grandpa’s truck, I had dropped my DS. I picked it back up, but what I didn’t realize was that the racing game I was playing had popped out, because, for some reason, I didn’t have a case on my DS. To this day, I’m still not 100% sure what racing game it exactly was, but I quite liked it when I had it, lol.
-
Currently, Rocket Slime 3, Bravely Default, Advance Wars 1, and a bunch of others depending on my short attention span lol.
-
- some kid in school was selling his for $50. That one is broke now :( but I got another one
- kingdom hearts
- Ever Oasis
- Everyday at lunch in highschool me and 2 friends would play smash the entire 40 min instead of eating. By the time I graduated I had 600 hours in smash
- ocarina of time. Never finished it. Got really discouraged cause I got spoiled when I started playing it for the first time 5 years ago
- My brother gave me his ds lite when I was a kid.
- There’s a lot of good games on the ds. My favorite one would probably be Pokemon Diamond.
- If you like turn based strategy, Civilization Revolutions is great.
- Endless summer days trying to catch pokemon and playing mario party with my brother.
- Nope, I haven’t touched my ds in years, it has been gathering dust. Any recommendations are welcome.
-
Well, I started with Nintendo handhelds in '89 with the Gameboy and played the living heck of that, but over the years moved to primarily TV-based consoles. Recently though, in my old age, I picked up some of the portables I never had and have a reshelled DS and a Hyrule 3DS XL. The 3DS is right behind my PS5 as favorite system of all time, mainly since it’s hacked and I can run all the games of my youth from all systems.
-
It’s certainly due to when I was most active in gaming as a kid but any Mario sidescroller will forever live in my heart. Pick a flavor, any system, if it has a plumber and he runs and jumps, it’s my favorite
-
I don’t really have any niche games on the DS systems these days, but if you want something really silly and esoteric, grab Penguin Wars for the Gameboy. It’s one-dimensionally terrible, annoying and utterly delightful.
-
Hi, all!
- I had a 2DS many years ago, but lost in on a bus :( Since then, I’ve bought a Pokeball-themed 2DS XL, and very recently I got a New 3DS from Japan which I’m enjoying. I also have an old DS Lite from my childhood. I also has a Gameboy Color years ago, but foolishly sold it when I was younger.
- Pokemon Alpha Sapphire, sunk a lot of hours into that one
- Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward (just be sure to play the prequel first if you want to have any idea what’s going on)
- I was pretty involved in 3DS hacking scene a few years ago and I have some fond memories of hanging out on the Nintendo Homebrew Discord server and helping people hack their consoles.
- Super Mario 3D Land and Zelda Link Between Worlds
Hi :)
- I got my original blue 3ds back on launch day, then replaced it with a new 3ds once the animal crossing hhd bundle came across NA. I waited for a while for the normal size one to be available, I prefer it over the xl.
- Monster hunter generations or 4, mh4 was the reason i got a new 3ds. I also recently used hshop to get a translation patch for monster hunter XX, aka generations ultimate which never released on 3ds in english. I think it’s more comfortable to play on the 3ds, compared to the switch.
- Fantasy life is very relaxing and cute, easy recommendation.
- I got my old 2ds gifted from my uncle something like seven or eight years ago.
- My favorite game at the moment is “Yo-Kai Watch 2: Psychic Specter”.
- I don’t know if it’s still underrated but everyone should try Yo-Kai watch at least one time.
- The 2ds was my first console ever so it was very exciting, other than that nothing too special.
- Randomized yo kai watch 2.
So lemme start…
-
I needed some entertainment in a car when I started taxi driving (when waiting or resting). Vita didn’t appeal to me much and was too pricey. I bought a New 3DS and a New 2DS XL, intending to return one of them (couldn’t afford both and I didn’t know how to choose). It was haaaard but I kept the XL for the larger screen.
-
GTA Chinatown Wars and Xenoblade Chronicles. I just have a thing for large, open world games.
-
I think Monster Hunter World doesn’t get enough love. Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy (+) is also pretty neat.
-
It was quite fun buying 2nd hand games. Although honestly I was disappointed with a lot of the most popular ones.
-
I still haven’t hacked my XL, I need to get around to it.
Good shout on the 2DS XL - I found the 3D tended to not add to the experience too much after a while, so the bigger screen was definitely the right decision.
I find it interesting you think Monster Hunter World is underrated, considering it’s literally the most popular Monster Hunter game to date! There’s a lot of people who prefer the older games, but the newer games definitely have much more appeal to most people.
Honestly I did like the 3D quite a bit - in general I actually do like 3D. Was thinking of buying a 3D monitor for the NVidia glasses thingy, but the monitors never were too good image quality-wise, and nobody except one company was making polarized 3D, only the flickering stuff… I’d still have taken one I think except it was clear that nobody else cares and it’s gonna die soon.
Also, the small 3DS build quality was amazing. I love when things are well made. The 2DS XL feels really flimsy and I kinda hate it honestly, even tho I realize it only feels like that and it’s not so bad.
Also the screen is kinda crap. Yea I know I’m shitting all over the 2DS XL… But at the end, I needed the bigger screen, and the 3DS XL was too expensive.
