Who’s winning at life this week? Do you have a discount code for Greggs? Found some hedge porn?

What’s happening that’s making you smile?

Week 3 and a bit of my new job as a Senior developer (although that wasn’t what was in the job spec!) and I’m still feeling pretty out of my depth, making some progress but I’m not entirely convinced that I’m cut out for the role, the imposter syndrome is very real right now.

First of all, congrats on the new job! Second of all I know this doesn’t really help because you know it deep down already, but it bears repeating until you start to accept it:

Everyone. EVERYONE around you also feels like an impostor to some extent. It does get better, but it never really goes away. Totally normal, and I’m sure you’ll do great.

Don’t worry, I’m a senior developer too and if I can do it, anyone can.

Serious answer though: there’s always a lot of learning in the first few months of a job. You can be senior in one job but then walk into another and half the things you knew that made you senior in the previous job are no longer relevant. But that’s ok, you just have to be willing to learn.

Yeah, you are in taking all that companies new procedures/culture etc, the new people who all already know each other, and it’s a lot but give yourself sometime and don’t psych yourself out. When I would feel impostery I used to lean into my role duties and use them to stiffen my spine.

Had a reply fail, sorry for double post.

Off to London for the rest of the week, all expenses paid, for a work conference. I am looking forward to drinking free booze and setting the hotel room Aircon to 16 degrees.

I hope we’re all having a good week so far. I’ve got £20 on my Nectar card after an Argos purchase, that’s definitely a win.

Other things that have made me smile this week include my peace lily putting out two bracts and finding a hoverfly larva wiggling around on my back after a walk yesterday - which I subsequently took outside to a bush. On that walk I met a lovely puppy in the park, his name was Tucker. This morning I found an affectionately named Cucumber spider in the bathroom which I also subsequently took outside to a bush. I’m sensing a theme this week! This is your reminder to look out for and appreciate the small things - unless you have arachnophobia.

My daughter would love finding that spider. We got an app called iSeek that allows you to scan animals and plants and it names them for you. She has became obsessed with nature and has amassed a huge library of stuff she’s scanned. Her favourite so far was a purple flower I’d picked for her while out a walk - turns out it’s something called Selfheal.

She’s always telling me some wee bit of info she got from the app. I love it.

That is really sweet, what a great way for your daughter to develop an interest in nature and in turn something for you to bond over. The app looks great and it doesn’t have any stupid subscription costs - a true educational app, love that. I might even download it myself, wish I’d known about it prior to finding my little bug friends! Lol.

Ah meeting excited puppies is the best! Yesterday on a walk I saw an overexcited spaniel pup who was just so happy to be chasing the ball he didn’t want to stop to pee, so sort of cocked a leg and continued hopping around in a circle on the other legs to follow where the ball was rolling.

I’d never heard of a cucumber spider but that little fella is surprisingly cute for something with so many legs :D

Last week I thought I’d lost an entire video project due to a combo of my laptop overheating in the ridiculous weather and acting funny, and then my editing software just…actually I still have no explanation for what it did but it was bad.

After multiple days of trying increasingly arcane suggestions from the internet and manually editing backup files of things, I’m happy to report the project is recovered!

Of course, it’s due to go out on YouTube tonight so I have like 5 hours to finish editing the whole thing (why am I on Lemmy?), but still, I’m just so relieved to not have to start completely from scratch!

Also this will sound bad but the other half is off on a trip to Spain with his friends on Saturday and I’m already SO looking forward to just having the whole house to make a mess of for 3.5 days 😂

Had the wean’s school show - Pirates of the Curry Bean. He played Captain Redbeard and his older sibling a member of his crew. He was chuffed to bits. They both did fantastic so I’m currently also chuffed to bits!

Managed to get the kitchen clean in time for the boiler service, bonus points I know have a deep cleaned kitchen. (I actually actually wiped behind the bottles of squash on the side.)

More prevalent in the past, but sometimes people would hide their “special interest” magazines in hedges rather than dispose of in their own bins.
