More thoughts on the ongoing microtransaction discussion. I personally agree with everything Datto says in this, and think he generally has more grounded takes than most in the community. I particularly agree with his thoughts on Cross’ “pay-to-win” arguments.

What does everyone else think?

I think both videos have good points but Cross’ is way more hyperbolic and reactionary.

I agree with Datto on pay to win in that it’s basically non existent unless you have really specific definitions. Unless you could straight up buy something like the immortal or Prometheus lens during laser tag weekend then I don’t think we don’t have pay to win.

Now, paying to have access to trials to be available to play on the weekend when immortal is up and have a good team or dumb luck to go flawless AND get a god roll is stretching it.

I don’t like MTX and I think they’re a bit of a problem but I understand that I’m in the minority and absolutely wasting breath trying to tell people not to pay for them.

I think a lot of this boils down on what each person defines as “pay to win”. This is vague and subjective - how does one “win” Destiny 2?

I don’t hear anyone arguing with Cross saying Destiny 2 has a free trial but if you want to play the game, you have to pay, and Bungie intentionally makes it hard to know what to buy if you’re on a budget.

Silver is not pay to win, no matter what anyone says. 90% of its uses are for cosmetics, and any weapons that are unlocked via dungeon keys etc have (for the most part) alternatives.

idk, saying you don’t have better gear for buying content is just a lie. you can’t play trials without paying, so you can’t access any of those guns without inserting money. same for all but 2 raids and a dungeon, nightfalls won’t let you run them if you don’t own the expansion they’re from too. i don’t think the argument that buying the new releases is “Pay to Win” since this game isn’t free to play, no matter what it says on the steam page. that’s like saying wow is P2W because you can only level to 20 for free and need to pay a sub/expack to get better gear/levels. if the new gear is rewarded through a new form of content, it doesn’t count. if you can just buy guns or rolls for guns or packs of mats, then that would probably be pay to win, but the small bits of mats and gear you get from the pass require you to buy the season, witch is content, and paying for the levels is just the stupidest thing that people pay for, just like the level boosts. (after getting a character to 1800 i got 1750 gear from the 2nd checkpoint in the legendary campaign, not mission, the checkpoint, about 20 minutes into the story.

I agree with Cross. The fact that you can buy your way through level 100 of the seasonal content on day one lessens the grind considerably with the xp bonuses, along with unlocking the deepsight tokens. The only time Cross became hyperbolic was at the end, when he described how the microtransaction creep could continue.

Yet even there he brings up several good points. Yet the best point he makes is that “pay to win” is a very subjective term. Where you draw the line may be quite different from another player.
