Free parking, on the surface of it, isn’t bad.
Free parking in a society who’s industry is built entirely around the necessity of having a car is a disaster of unyielding congestion.
If giving something good for free collapses the system, then that free thing isn’t bad. The system is broken and needs to be overhauled entirely.
Free parking isn’t bad if there’s nothing else you could do with the space. In cities, where space is always at a premium, that’s never true.
Yup, or another way to put it, parking in cities can’t be free or even close to free. If it’s free for the car owner, it means that the city is paying a lot yearly to keep the space as dedicated parking.
Compare this to parking in rural areas. It’s still not completely free, but it costs so little it might as well be free.
