Released at the height of the 2000s zombie craze, Max Brooks’ 2006 novel “World War Z” treated itself almost like a historical document. Modeled after a 1984 WWII book “The Good War: An Oral History of World War Two”, it fascinated readers and quickly became a bestseller; gaining even more notoriety than Brooks’ 2003 satirical book “The Zombie Survival Guide”.
I had to watch it for a class in college, thought it was alright. Later I watched the YMS video about it and realized the movie is pretty terrible lol
I admit that I didn’t see the movie, it looked like it was probably a fine zombie movie, but we already have plenty of those.
The book, I thought, was a really fun and unique take on zombies, and I would really love to see it adapted properly. I don’t think a movie is necessarily the right way to go with it, I think it would really shine as mockumentary mini series, something with sort of a Ken Burns vibe.
I still need to pick up the book and read it. I’ve had it in my kindle library for a few years now.
I’m listening to it as an audiobook right now, and boy is it a treat. After the whole covid shit, it comes just short of prophetic. It’s also written in a way that made me laugh at the absurdity of some situations without bringing me back to the shit times of the pandemic.
