Is it possible in Inkscape to duplicate an object by dragging it while holding down a modifier key? I have found conflicting answers through web search, and have tried every combination of keys to no avail.

so for now you need to ctrl-d then move instead
@5teverin0 you should be able to “stamp” copies of objects by dragging the objects and pressing the Spacebar on the places where you want a copy.
