For those who don’t know yes there really was a Saint Nicholas. The patron saint of “sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, children, brewers, pawnbrokers, unmarried people, and students in various cities and countries around Europe” and most importantly toymakers.

His legends are numerous from what you’d expect of the real Santa Claus of gift giving to “resurrected three children, who had been murdered and pickled in brine by a butcher planning to sell them as pork during a famine.” you don’t hear that one in any Christmas songs
