This article made me realise as an Australian I watch too much American politics. I had in my head MyPillow guy scale of donations in the $10,000’s at least for this to hit headlines but then in the report they mentioned $500 for a fundraising event. I don’t know the laws so won’t comment if good or bad still.
What was not elaborated on, were the concerns flagged by the external recruitment agency linked with this donation or a completely separate set of issues. Seems this report tried to combine them to increase impact. The other concerns could have been been simply that he was not considered suitable for the role in terms of experience or performance but it was presented ambiguously in this news snippet.
American’s have a very different conception of corruption to Australians. Once we entertain the idea that small scale corruption becomes OK, then we are on a slippery slope. I like that we had a premier who resigned over a bottle of wine that wasn’t declared. It makes the rules crystal clear.
