    I don’t quite get why Black does the move to make the solution work. Seems like a suboptimal move to make when it just takes a rook or knight with any other move.

      It is suboptimal as far as points at the end of the game, but black doesn’t have any option that escapes checkmate so maybe it’s just playing to promote if White blunders?

            Oh the Knight to E3 alternate is what I was missing there. Thanks! The E7 lets the king run to D4 which is what was throwing me with that choice.

              Yeah, I really enjoyed how many different ways there are to mate in two. Puzzle is not finding one, the puzzle is finding all of them.
